Richard Cohen, M.A., a psychotherapist and educator, is one of the leading experts in the field of sexual orientation and the author of Coming Out Straight, Gay Children Straight Parents, and Straight Talk About Homosexuality.
Cohen is the director emeritus of the International Healing Foundation (IHF), a non-profit organization he founded in 1990. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, IHF offers counseling services, teleconferencing classes, healing seminars, counselor training programs, speaking engagements, and resource materials. As the executive director, Cohen travels extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America conducting seminars on sexual orientation, communication skills, and parenting skills. He is a frequent guest lecturer on college and university campuses, and at therapeutic and religious conferences.
Cohen holds a Master of Arts degree in psychology from Antioch University and a bachelor's degree from Boston University. He worked in child abuse treatment services, family reconciliation services, general counseling, and facilitated support groups. For three years, he worked as an HIV/AIDS educator for the American Red Cross.
As an expert in sexual orientation therapy, both as a counselor and through his personal experience transitioning from homosexual to heterosexual in the 1980s, Cohen has been interviewed by newspapers, radio and television media, including appearances on 20/20, Larry King Live, The O'Reilly Factor, Rachel Maddow Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. In addition to academic papers, Mr. Cohen has authored three books: 1) Coming Out Straight, 2) Gay Children, Straight Parents, and 3) Straight Talk About Homosexuality. Coming Out Straight is available in English, German, Spanish, Polish, Italian and Croatian.
Cohen lives in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area with his wife and youngest son. His two adult children are making their mark in the world.
